Can I get some suggestions on bait if I’m fishing in a man made cana that contains bluegill, bass, catfish.

and trout? I know nothing about fishing but me and my husband are moving into a house that is located in a subdivision that has stocked, man made canals. We have a little peer off our house. Someone suggested I start feeding them fish food for a little while then start fishing. Can you suggest some food to feed them and also any bait/tackle suggestions? It’s just catch and release but I thought I would take advantage of the peacefullness of fishing.

I can’t recommend any good fish food, but you can find a good variety at an aquatic store or somewhere like Bass Pro Shop. As far as bait, I always recommend using live bait. Worms and crickets are the best for what you described, especially if you’re just sport fishing. It’s their natural diet, not some fluorescent pink and purple piece of plastic.
If you a new-b when it comes to fishing, than i would recommend a a bobber and worm, can’t go wrong with that, you can get any thing as from bass, bream, and cats with ‘em =]
Use god ‘ol dog food to feed them.

Nightcrawlers are the ferfect beginner bait. Just get a simple Zebco33 rod/reel combo to start with. Just put the worm on the hook, cast, and wait (note: this can be the most relaxing part). As you start to catch a few notice what time of day, depth of the bobber, and temperature. You can keep track of this in a notebook and improve your catch rate when you are on the water. Another suggestion, if I may, please catch and release. By letting them go they will be there next time too!
To train the fish is as simple as tossing a loaf of bread on the water every day for about 2 weeks at the same time each day. You can also use semi dry ( soaked in water for about 2 minutes) dog food, cat food and if you want to get all fancy about it, your left over table scraps ( no bones..it looks nasty in the water). You will definitely want to add a light source to the dock at night, this attracts fish to your spot as well. Go with a light system that uses solar power to save on electricity bills. Also it provides you light when you feel like catching those catfish at night. As far as gear goes, it all comes down to how sporting you feel. If you just want to catch them and not work so hard, go with a heavy line (12-15 pound test) but if you want some adrenaline pumping action even with the Bream, go with 4-8 pound test. Since you will have the fish trained a long rod isn’t necessary..6 footer to 6.5 footer will do with a spinning reel.
Tips:
1)use what you feed the fish daily for bait.
2)For bass, catch a small bream about the size of a credit card first. Then start a feeding frenzy by tossing out whatever you feed them. When you hear the large pops of bass feeding or see a large bass, toss the bream into the middle of the frenzy and hold on.
3) For Catfish, start a feeding frenzy and toss your line away from it about 2 feet. This will allow it a chance to sink to the bottom without being pecked off by the bream. Use a split shot or 2 to get the bait down faster.
Hope this helps out. ~good luck catchin’.
Put a double handful of dry dog food in a nylon stocking and tie it to your dock to feed fish. It is the cheapest and easiest way to feed them. Since it is catch and release, use barbless hooks. They are easier to remove without killing the fish.
What you are talking about doing is called “chumming” the water, and in some places is against the law. Check with the management office about restriction before doing anything, as well as wether or not the water is controlled by the DFG (department of fish and game), and if so, what restrictions they may have. Some waters do not allow live bait, which is another thing to check on. Is this a CANAL, or a man made LAKE around the neighborhood? The latter is becoming a popular theme when corporations buys large plots of land and then divy them up to build houses, and usually a home owners association will have control over such restrictions, so check on that. If it is in fact a CANAL, then you may need to ask the DFG or even the bearue or reclamation about restriction.
But then again, if you don’t live in California, you might just be able to do as you dang well please and ENJOY fishing without having to become a lawyer first!
bluegill, use somthing small i even use bread when im fishing with my nefews. bass, it depends if they are top water feeding i would use spinner, crank, or jig if you want to you can also use a buzz bait but ive not had any luck with it if the are bottom warter feeding use a ruber worm or lizzord. catfist, it depend on how big you want them if smaller usr liver or some stink bait if some kind if you want the big one but brim and those small bluegill on them… good luck!
cut up some hot dogs and toss them where you plan to fish.Do this for a week or so then start fishing with hot dogs in that spot.I found a grocery store that sells packages of hot dogs for 59 cents for 8.I would never eat them but the fish love em lol.
a bait i use for fishing is bits of bread and cold ham. a suggestion for fishing is what i call the ’snap cast’. you do it by holding the fishing pole back and waiting 3 seconds before you swing it foreword and when the pole is fully casted you take the handlebar that you reel the string in with and jerk on it several times.
